Abbott steps down from Shadow Home Secretary role due to illness
Statement from Barry Gardiner
Diane Abbott has today stood aside from her position as Shadow Home Secretary due to a serious long-term condition. She has been diagnosed with a condition that requires ongoing treatment and will mean she is unable to fulfill her duties in the short term.
"I am deeply disappointed to have to step aside from my role at this time," said Ms Abbott. "I have always been passionate about my work and I am committed to continuing to serve the people of Britain. However, I must put my health first and I am confident that I will be back to fighting fitness soon."
Ms Abbott, who is a close ally of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, said she would be "taking a break from the fray" to focus on her health. She thanked her colleagues for their support and said she looked forward to returning to her role as soon as possible.
Barry Gardiner, Labour's Shadow International Trade Secretary, said: "Diane has been an outstanding Shadow Home Secretary and her departure is a great loss to the Labour Party. She has been a tireless advocate for justice and equality and I know she will continue to make a valuable contribution to public life."
Ms Abbott's departure comes at a difficult time for Labour, which is facing a challenge from the Conservatives in the upcoming general election. However, her colleagues have expressed their confidence that she will be back in action soon.
